'Alarming Projects':
Young people from Tanfield Comprehensive School fitted smoke alarms in the homes of elderly people in the community. The young people got to know some of the older people in the local area whilst making them safer in their homes. Older people's perceptions of young people were changed as a result.
Totally Rubbish Calendar:
Young people made artistic creations from re-used and recycled materials. The art and the artists were photographed for a calendar, which was given to local companies, sister charities, community groups and schools.
Celebrating Cultural Diversity:
Four young people brought together young women from schools across the community to take part in an Asian dance project. The project comprised a series of 8 workshops culminating in a community performance.
Community Restaurant:
Young people planned the menus, chose and purchased the ingredients, learnt to cook the dishes and sampled them. Elderly members of the community were invited to the school where young people prepared and served meals and entertain their guests. This project could happen as a one off event or could continue once a week for a whole term.
Dynamic garden Project:
This project aims to provide the community with a garden suitable for relaxation and play. Young people designed and planed the development of the garden during a weekend. As well as the environmental learning aspect, pupils developed life skills such as using the telephone and purchasing in shops.
